The BAE Nimrod MRA4 is a next generation maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare jet aircraft. The MRA4 offers the latest in military technology, with an increased range of 8,000km. It can dive up to 1,500ft below the surface and stay submerged for up to six hours at speeds of 30 knots.
The Nimrod MRA4 is the most advanced maritime patrol aircraft in Britain and one of the most modern maritime patrol aircraft in service. It was designed to replace the aging Nimrod MR2, which had been used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) for thirty years. The new design has an increased range, a bigger payload capability and better low-level surveillance capabilities than its predecessor.
The Nimrod MRA4 features uprated Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines that are more fuel efficient than predecessors; giving it a longer range and greater endurance. The RAF’s fleet will be fitted with “Mode 5” IFF (Identification Friend or Foe), enabling them to share information with NATO allies without being misidentified.
